A few people have recommended Tambo Andina to me recently, including a friend who stayed there for about three months. So I went to pay the hostel a visit and look around, and it definitely seems like a great option if you’re looking for a cheap hostel in Tarapoto.
Tambo Andina falls into what Spanish-speaking backpackers call the BBB category of hostels: bueno, bonito y barato. Good, attractive and cheap.
On top of that, Tambo Andina’s friendly female owner, Deny, will make you feel at home. The location is also good, in a nice part of town (Partido Alto) about five blocks from the main square. Like all good hostels, Tambo Andina also has comfortable communal areas, including one on the top floor where smokers can hang out while looking across Tarapoto.
The rooms are simple but clean, and room rates are very competitive for Tarapoto. For just S/ 15 you can stay in the small three-bed dorm, which is about as cheap as you’ll find in the city. A private room with its own bathroom costs as little as S/ 30, which is one hell of a bargain. And if you want to stay for an extended period, you might be able to get a discount.
From what I’ve heard, the Wi-Fi could be faster, but it’s OK for all your basic internet needs. Other than that, there’s not much to complain about, especially for the price. There’s always the risk of noisy backpackers, especially in a budget hostel, but Tambo Andina seems like a fairly chilled-out place — it’s definitely not a crazy party hostel or anything like that.
Overall, Tambo Andina ticks all the right boxes for a cheap hostel in Tarapoto, and should suit most budget backpackers. Well worth a look.
